Weather & Best Times to Visit
The inn is open year-round, and every season brings its own character to the Southern Rockies.
Spring (May-June): Temperatures gradually warm, wildflowers begin to bloom, and wildlife is very active. Expect variable weather — sunny warm days can mix with snow flurries, particularly at higher elevations. This is a wonderful quieter time to visit. Most of the business in Waterton are open the 2nd week of May.
Summer (June–August): The busiest and most popular season. Expect warm to hot days (occasionally reaching 30°C/86°F), with cool evenings. Waterton National Park is at its most vibrant, with all facilities open, wildflowers in full bloom, and endless hiking opportunities. June is when Waterton receives its most rainfall, so pack a rain layer. By mid July, the snow has melted and the highest mountain passes are accessible.
Fall (September–October): Many guests' favourite season. Crowds thin out, the larches turn gold, wildlife is very active, and the light is stunning. Temperatures are cooler and snow is possible at any elevation. A beautiful and peaceful time to visit.
Winter (November–March): The area experiences mild winters by Alberta standards, thanks to frequent warm chinook winds that can send temperatures soaring dramatically even in the coldest months. Snow is typical but can come and go quickly. Waterton townsite is much quieter in winter and most business are closed, but the scenery is spectacular and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available.
Wind is a signature feature of this region — Waterton Lakes National Park is one of the windiest places in Canada. Average daily winds run around 30 km/hr, and gusts well over 100 km/hr are not uncommon in fall and winter. Pack a windproof layer year-round, especially if you plan to spend time in the park. The summer breeze is welcome with just enough to keep the flies and mosquitoes away.
Absolutely, in any season. Mountain weather can change rapidly, and the combination of warm sunny valleys and cooler high elevations means mornings and evenings can be significantly cooler than midday. Layers and rain gear are always a good idea.
